How to Replace the Ignition Key in the Saab9-3
If the car key won't engage in the ignition you must replace it. This guide will walk you through how to do it on a Saab 9-3. You'll have to replace the key, buy an additional reprogrammable cell and purchase a new case for your key-fob.
Contrary to earlier models, modern Saab vehicles use a transponder in the key-fob instead physical key that can be used to unlock and start the car. The reprogrammable batteries that are in the key-fob eventually wear out, and they will not be able to hold charge. This is particularly true if you keep using the same key in the same lock.
The good part is that the battery can be replaced easily by an experienced locksmith. You can also do it yourself if have the proper tools and a bit of patience. The first step is taking the key-fob off. This is done by inserting a flathead screwdriver in the slot located in the middle of the case. It is important to take your time, as the plastic is extremely thin and can easily be damaged.
After the case is opened, you can make the new key by combining lower part of old key with a transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is mated to the CIM correctly, which can be the difference in replacing the only key for your Saab 9-3.
How do you replace the ignition Key in a Saab 900
If you don't have two keys, you will need remove the dashboard and steering wheel for access to the ignition. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable. After the battery has been disconnected, you are able to remove the trim and dashboard pieces around the steering wheel. Once the dashboard is removed, insert screws into the hole behind the ignition switch.
The ignition cylinder is fitted with a key lock that can prevent the vehicle from starting if it does not have the key in it. If the ignition switch of your 900 isn't working properly, check the key to determine whether it's inside the lock or snared into the barrel of ignition. You should also rotate your keys and keep them clean to avoid bending.

How do I replace the ignition Key on an XC90 Saab
If your SAAB 9-3 key fob is having trouble turning the barrel of the lock It could be the time to replace it. Fortunately, the process is rather simple and doesn't need you to visit an agent. Instead, you can do it yourself at home by using a few simple tools.
First, you'll need to prepare the keys for your new car. Before you start, disable the anti-theft feature by placing blocks under your rear wheels and engaging your handbrake. Insert the key into the ignition, and then turn it to the "on" position. This will activate the accessories, but not start the engine. Repeat this procedure 5 times, and then keep the key in the "on" position.
You'll need to purchase a new case for your key fob. They are readily available at many auto parts stores and are generally quite affordable. You can get them without electronics depending on the model.
To open the case you need to gently push the screwdriver with a flathead into the slot in the middle. Once you split the case, you'll have access to all of the internal electronic components. To get rid of the electronics, use a small screwdriver, and try to pry them out gently.
